collision avoidance

What is a Collision Avoidance System?

Collision avoidance system is an automobile safety system designed to reduce the severity of a collision.

Camera Monitoring system

Camera Monitoring system

Vehicle blind spots are a huge contributory factor to collisions in all industries. The complex shape and the sheer size of many commercial vehicles and machines greatly limit driver visibility, making collisions more likely. The cost to industry of property or vehicle damage is significant and is magnified by associated costs such as downtime. Even greater are the corporate and emotional costs when there is personal injury.

Camera monitor systems are used in a wide range of on-and off-road applications to meet a host of health and safety and legislative requirements. They can eliminate blind spots to prevent costly vehicle damage and, more importantly, to save lives.

  • Can cover multiple blind spots on a single monitor.
  • Can reduce vehicle damage and downtime.
  • Can help reduce insurance premiums.
  • Improvement on mirrors.
  • Clearer visibility in low light conditions.
  • Less likely to be damaged or broken.

Eliminating the Nearside Blind Spot

  • Most cyclist fatalities happen at low speeds, typically at road junctions and when moving off from a stationary position. A flush mount side view camera, triggered by the indicator solves this problem by giving a clear view of the nearside blind spot, where vulnerable cyclists and pedestrians are often hidden from the driver’s view.

Rear View Camera Benefits

  • Prevents costly reversing collisions with people, property or vehicles.
  • Reduces vehicle damage to the rear.
  • Reduced insurance premiums
  • Assists safe and easier manoeuvring.

Forward Vision

Due to size of machinery and elevated operator positions, a blind spot often exists to the front. ISO 5006 states that ‘a driver must be able to detect the presence of a standing person, of short stature [approx. 1.5meters], 1meter out from the perimeter of the machine.’ A camera monitor system is the best solution for all-round visibility.

Front View Camera Benefits

  • Meets front view requirements of EU blind spot directive 2003/97/EC (Class VI).
  • Reduced front vehicle damage.
  • Prevents collisions with workers or pedestrians.

360° View Benefits

  • Comprehensive surround view in a single image for safer manoeuvring.
  • Eliminates blind spots
  • Reduces danger for vulnerable road users.
  • Reduces risk of costly vehicle or property damage.
  • Multiple image display options.

All Hazards in a Single Image

When manoeuvring a commercial vehicle, a driver can have up to 10 places to look (six mirrors, a monitor, and direct view to the front, left and right of the cab). With pedestrians and other vehicles possibly moving in the vicinity, conventional safety systems do not allow him to view all possible hazard areas at once.

Backeye 360° Systems give the driver a ‘bird’s-eye’ view of the vehicle, so all blind spots are eliminated. Presenting all-round visibility in a single image saves the driver having to process information from several mirrors or monitors in quick succession, making it easier to assess and react to possible hazards.

  • The system works by taking the images from four cameras installed around the vehicle and ‘stitching’ them together in real time to give the driver all potential hazard areas in one view.

Our new mobile digital recording systems capture footage from up to eight vehicle-mounted cameras. They provide an accurate witness, giving indisputable evidence in the case of false claims, incidents or vandalism whilst also supporting the driver, who is often the subject of increased scrutiny.

By recording data, companies are able to make cost savings on claims and insurance which would have otherwise been awarded without solid proof of liability.

  • Disprove false claims such as ‘crash for cash’ scams.
  • Protection for drivers who may be wrongly accused.
  • Provides irrefutable evidence for insurance and legal proceedings.
  • Aids and encourages driver best practice, so less vehicle damage and accidents.
  • Vandalism deterrent.
  • Helps to lower insurance premiums.
  • Peace of mind for passengers, drivers and companies.
  • Can record up to eight channels simultaneously.
  • Up to 1164 hours recording time.
  • Simultaneous mirror-recording onto an in-built SD card, meaning there is always a back-up of footage.
  • Built-in GPS for recording speed and location. Useful evidential information in the case of a claim or accident.
  • Eight configurable trigger inputs. i.e. speed, G-Force, motion detection, voltage, video signal loss, and optional remote panel with panic button.
  • Pre and Post trigger recording of to 30 min. for highlighting events leading up to or following accidents.
  • Audio functionality with high quality compression (Camera and/or monitor must have microphone).
  • Four recording mode options; constant, only recording alarms, specified times set by user or by the remote panel (sold separately) which provides additional security for the driver at the touch of a panic button.
  • Motion detection for capturing footage when the vehicle is unattended.
  • G-sensor (Built-in on MDR-408-1000, optional on MDR-400-500) provides useful impact data in the case of a collision and harsh accelerating and braking

Fully compatible with our camera and monitor systems and Back eye 360, the intelligent camera system which provides a real-time bird’s-eye view of the vehicle in a single image.

By recording data, companies are able to make cost savings on claims and insurance which would have otherwise been awarded without solid proof of liability.

Industries such as mining, quarrying, agriculture, construction and waste all use huge machines and plant equipment, which by their very nature pose a danger if they are not managed safely. Blind spots tend to be much larger on these vehicles and include not only the rear and nearside but also the front, especially with elevated driver positions. Terrains are harsher, vehicles are exposed to the elements more aggressively whilst thick dust and darkness decrease visibility further.

The ISO 5006 standard for earthmoving equipment addresses the problem of blind spots around a vehicle and states that the operator must be able to “see around the machine to enable proper, effective and safe operation.” Camera monitor systems provide this to some extent, but in difficult environmental conditions a range of complementary devices are vital to give visual and audible operator warnings.
